Reaping radical oats, can u cluster for a promotion & how SMEs get best out of employees

Reaping their Radical Oats!
I love these stories where someone picks themselves up again and has a go – in an entirely different industry!  This is about mother and daughter team, Miriam and Tabitha Monaghan and their product, “Radical Oats” – chilled probiotic yogurt with oats.  Following the collapse of the family fashion business, they started selling Radical Oats in local food store, Nolan’s, went to Bord Bia for advice and now they’re in Tesco, Supervalu and Spar! http://www.businessandleadership.com/small-business/item/45696-mother-and-daughter/

Can u cluster for an inexpensive promotion?
This is a good example of an inexpensive promotion but one that has the potential for huge share-abililty – it’s the “Selfie Chef” competition from Love Irish Food which is being run on their Facebook page.  Prizes are inexpensive - €1,000 first prize, iPad Mini for the runner-up and weekly prizes.  And as there are 80 brands in the Love Irish Food stable, this will be shared extensively – so are there any brands or companies you could join forces with to run something similar?

SMEs - bringing out the best in your employees
How 3x SMEs bring out the best in their employees – whether it’s providing a professional coach for each of them so they appreciate they’re being invested in – or as 2 of the 3 state - allowing and trusting your staff to get on with it …… http://www.theguardian.com/small-business-network/2014/apr/25/efficiency-sme-employees-bringing-out-best

Food start-up? Ideas to market your business & How to make your press release stand out..

Food start-up?  Ideas to market your business
Some innovative marketing here from two food start-ups – “Hello Fresh” and “Capsicana” in the UK - both typical start-ups i.e. with little or no money!  “Hello Fresh” delivers ingredients and recipes to 60,000 homes monthly while “Capsicana” is a chilli business. One of the initiatives from the “Hello Fresh” team saw them dressed up as carrots, handing out root vegetables at tube stations - the veg had a tag with a URL which was a video of their chef making carrot soup!  “Capsicana” reach out to food bloggers and look for meaningful followers rather than just numbers.  They host Twitter cook-offs and developed a Chilli sausage for national sausage week!  Oh, and they also came upon a PR guy who’s advising them free of charge!  http://www.theguardian.com/small-business-network/2013/nov/05/winning-new-business-small-business-how-to-market-a-food-business

The Lego Movie – content marketing at its finest?
Having not seen the movie, I can’t comment on this – but those of you who have may agree or disagree with the headline proposition?

5 secrets re talking to the media, I'm in impressive company, food entrepreneurship & more

5 secrets to talking to the media (and not sounding like a fool)

To quote Bill Gates, “If I was down to my last dollar, I would spend it on PR.” I like that man!  But for companies who can’t afford to hire in PR expertise, this is a good practical article offering 5 tips on how to talk to the media – Create Your Own Story, Know the Media, Identify your 3 Top Messages, Don’t Say Anything you don’t want to see in Tomorrow’s Paper and Put Yourself in Their Shoes. The author elaborates on each point – well worth a read.

IRFU, Joanne Hynes, The Merrion…and moi!

I’m in good company - appearing alongside the IRFU, Joanne Hynes, The Merrion, DCU and many more in the new ezine from Bossanova – cleverly called “Bossanova Notes”.   Bossanova designed both my diy PR and grainne byrne PR logos – both of which I love.  But what really appealed to me was their quirky suggestion that I DIY my own business cards – and have a special diy PR stamp to do so!  Take a peek here - and also check out some of Bossanova’s other quality, innovative design projects..

Food Industry – hot bed of entrepreneurship

The food industry in Ireland is a hotbed of entrepreneurship and a really exciting sector right now.  Catch up on what’s happening in this interview with Michael Carey, Chairman, Bord Bia and find out about the success of Bord Bia’s “Origin Green” programme, about “Food Works”, a joint Bord Bia/ Enterprise Ireland/Teagasc initiative and about Carey’s own company, “The Company of Food” which provides funding, mentoring and expertise to high-potential food start-ups. If only I could come up with a great new food idea….one that involves dark chocolate, red wine and scallops maybe………maybe not! http://www.businessandleadership.com/exporting/item/45409-sector-profile-food-and/

“More F***s than 50 Shades of Grey”

Alan Jordan of BookBuzz reviews “The Hard Thing about Hard Things” by Ben Horowitz who is “…big on profanity with more f***s than a copy of 50 Shades of Grey” according to Alan.   We’re prone to profanity here in Ireland – but does it have a place in business?  Personally, I think not.  But challenging people is what BookBuzz do – they’re a really interesting business offering “The World’s leading minds working on your business”. To quote them, they “distill the essence of lessons from the world’s greatest business minds” and applying the relevant ones to help challenged businesses.
