Tech start-up looking for media coverage? What Ryanair thinks of Irish ads, Choosing values....

Tech start-up looking for media coverage?
Good news for tech start-ups who would like a profile on IrishTechNews.net – from January they move from one “Business Showcase” a week to two – with start-ups being featured on Thursdays and established businesses on Tuesday.  If you’re a start-up and want to be featured, email simon@irishtechnews.net

How to choose the right values
A more philosophical piece for the time of year that’s in it – apparently there are too many values, not too few, so how do we get our values? And how do we navigate between ‘value dogmatism’ and ‘value relativism’?  An interesting piece but not sure if I know how to link this type of philosophical thought to actions and reality?

What Ryanair thinks of current Irish ads……
Kenny Jacobs, Chief Marketing Officer, Ryanair seems to share his boss’ tendency to be outspoken and in this piece from marketing.ie gives his opinion on current Irish ads from, amongst others, one of the multiples, a discounter, two mobile phone operators and, of course, Ryanair……!

6 Pinterest tips for B2B, the Singing Samaritans & "too young to listen to Radio 1"

6 ways for B2B to use Pinterest
I have to say I’m guilty of not using Pinterest as a B2B platform – I did set up a DIY PR page but let that fall by the wayside – but no more - having read this article, I’ll start a business Pinterest account again.  The author advises us all to use Pinterest to increase visibility, brand awareness and revenue and for sharing.  Her tips include using Rich Pins and that a Pin isn’t just for Christmas!

“I’m too young to listen to Radio One”
…..and other tweets reacting to Ray D’Arcy’s move back to RTE!  For the anoraks amongst us this was definitely a shock announcement – but a very interesting one.  Will his Today FM listeners follow him to his new afternoon slot on Radio 1, will Mooney’s listeners stay with the new presenter, is he taking over from Brendan O’Connor on the Saturday night TV show?  And, of course, who will replace Ray at Today FM? We have to wait and see!

Sing-along-a & Support Dublin Samaritans
On a much more serious note, for some people, Christmas can emphasise suicidal feelings, loneliness and depression.  Dublin Samaritan volunteers are available all over the Christmas period - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - to listen to and to offer emotional support to people who are finding it difficult.
The only fund-raising event they have each year is their carol-singing which takes place this Saturday 13th and the following Saturday 20th December between 12 noon and 4pm on Grafton Street.  The volunteers will be helped by the dulcet tones of Mary Coughlan, Paddy Cole, Conor Hamilton and the Garda Male Choir with other names to be announced.  All monies raised fund the provision of the listening service and the Dublin Samaritans has no paid executive.  Disclosure – I do some work with Dublin Samaritans and they’re a fantastic group of people - so if you’re in Grafton Street this Saturday or next, please support them – and sing along!  www.dublinsamaritans.ie

lessons for retailers post Cyber Monday, a year in books for kids and rebuilding Lego

A Year in Books for Children
Love this idea from London bookshop, Lutyens & Rubinstein which was highlighted by model and writer, Laura Bailey in the December issue of “Red” magazine – “Children’s Year in Books” whereby you can send a child a beautifully packaged book every month for a year.  What a fab idea from the bookshop – wonder if any Irish ones offer the same service?  Apparently L&R offer the same service for adults and – how cute – for babies!  Subscriptions can be for 3, 6 or 12 months.

Lessons for Retailers post Cyber Monday/Black Friday
With the massive increase in sales of phablets (phones/tablets) and the ongoing trend towards bigger phone screens, the online browsing and shopping experience will become easier and more enjoyable for consumers.  But customers still have issues with paying for delivery and so currently ‘webrooming’ (research online, buy in-store) remains very popular.  And the emphasis should be on helping customers to buy more year-round rather than retailers sell more – just some of the tips in this interesting piece.

Building Lego back up
Lego got out of areas where they weren’t world class says Lego Chief Executive, Jorgen Vig Knudstorp, explaining how he rebuilt Lego so that they had a 10% increase in sales last year.  There was nothing wrong with the brand or with the product, he says, just the way they were being managed. Good article.

Kim K - lewd, but shrewd, PR? 3 things Taylor Swift does right on social media & fewer promotional posts on Facebook...

Kim Kardashian – lewd and shrewd PR
Whatever you think of her – and I’m not a fan – you can only wonder at how Kim Kardashian stays so high profile.  We know how she got there – in this article, the author omits to mention a certain video - but, it’s certainly not the reason she stays there.  Her latest stunt – Break the Internet – was a masterful one as it was true to what she is all about i.e. her body.  Also, as the author says, it created a buzz around her brand, involved a certain amount of risk (not sure that’s true in her case) and was very visual.  See more here…..

3 things Taylor Swift does right on social media
She post photos of fans (that’s good – it’s about them, not her), she gets personal (posts pic from her mum) and she is ‘fearless’ i.e. posts a photo of herself as a child with braids!  That may not be the best example of fearless – but she is known for being outspoken and not afraid to say what she thinks.  Long may she continue!

Fewer promotional posts on Facebook
We won’t see so many promotional posts – but we will see more ads – but these ads will now be more relevant, says Facebook Videos uploaded directly to Facebook, not YouTube, perform well

Sainsburys Xmas ad "dangerous & disrepectful"? End of Clickbait? Dublin radio listenership & Irish Environmentalists

New Sainsbury ad ‘dangerous & disrespectful’?
I don’t think so – I think it’s a brave move and beautifully done with minimal branding which is very subtle. Obviously it’s very timely in view of the 100th anniversary of World War 1 – and it was done in association with the British Legion, so if they’re happy…?  I’m always a John Lewis Xmas ad fan but this leaves all the other ads in the shade..

Is the end of ‘Clickbait’ nigh?
Very interesting article with possible future ramifications for brand publishers down the line.  In the US, they’re looking at selling advertising online based on the length of time someone stays on a story rather than on page impressions.  This could lead to the demise of ‘tabloidisation’ where sensationalist headlines are used to get people to click through to a story that often doesn’t live up to the billing.  It’s certainly good news for the producers of quality content.

Dublin Radio Listenership
RTE Radio 1 still rules the airwaves in Dublin with FM104 second and Newstalk third according to the latest JNLR (Joint National Listenership Research) results which came out recently.  But all radio stations except 2FM lost listeners in Dublin – 2FM gained but off a very low base anyway.  See the figures here…..

Insight – Irish Environmentalists
19% of Irish adults apparently are environmentally ‘keen’ – they’re 26% more likely than the average adult to be in the top fifth of radio listeners and they’re twice as likely as the average adult to listen to radio progammes on Science and Nature.

Let John Lewis light up your Twitter pic, Internal Comms & insular Irish media.....

Retailers’ Christmas Ads
Tomorrow, Thursday 6th November sees the launch of the much-anticipated John Lewis Christmas ad but, as with other retailers, they don’t just rely on TV alone, these ads are all multi-media affairs.  I really like this though – you can sign up to get your Twitter profile ‘lit up’ by John Lewis tomorrow! http://www.thejohnlewistwittertwinkle.co.uk/

While this isn’t TV, this is a beautiful Christmas treatment entitled “Into the Woods” from Harvey Nichols….

Internal comms – keeping that ‘start-up’ spirit
This company went from 4 employees to 20 within 2 years and worried that the fun, unpredictable atmosphere that’s part and parcel of working with a start-up had gone – so read what they did here.  Some of the measures may seem obvious – but they work – and they’re simple and inexpensive!  You have to get the internal communications right for the external communications with customers, clients and other stakeholders to work!

Irish media is insular
As a nation who are obsessed with what others think of us, this is worth a read.  The Guardian’s media commentator, Roy Greenslade talks about how insular the Irish media is and that it exists in a ‘media bubble’ – but I imagine this is true of every small country?  Especially an island nation like ours?  He specifically mentions the fact that most newspapers here did not refer to the fact that Mairia Cahill was formerly a member of a dissident republican movement – however, this wasn’t the first time I heard that – I could swear I heard this on Newstalk?  He says the insular nature of the media is due to the increasing concentration of media ownership. I must say I have found on occasion that the Daily Mail will print things that the others won’t?

"Swim the M50!", is this the future for print magazines and info on happenings in media...

“Swim the M50!” - & help a charity
“Swim the M50” takes place tomorrow, Wednesday 29th October between 7am and 10pm at the swimming pools in Ballyfermot, Ballymun, Finglas and Markievicz Sports & Fitness Centres. This is a shameless plug for an event I’m involved with – but it’s all in a good cause.
The Challenge at each Centre is to have people swim a total of 45km or 1,800 lengths during the day – so whether you can do 1 length or 100, your help in getting to the overall total will be warmly welcomed!  Admission at the Centres is free tomorrow but participants and onlookers will be invited to donate to a local charity collecting at each of the Centres.  “Swim the M50!” was devised to mark the rebranding of Dublin City Council Sports & Fitness Centres and aims to create an added buzz and excitement around each Centre in their own local community. www.dublincity.ie/sportsandfitness

The future for print magazines?
This is a very interesting development from Brazil - it does sound a bit cumbersome and can’t imagine how much it costs - but I’m sure it will be simplified over time!  Trialled in a special edition of a celebrity magazine, readers could ‘like’ products on Facebook by pressing buttons embedded in the print editions.  Readers signed up via Facebook to receive the magazine and each one had a chip embedded with a link to that reader’s own Facebook page.

Some quick media updates:
It’s been a busy few days with media announcements which may be of interest to your business – they include:

the launch of a new online food and drink Irish magazine – www.thetaste.ie – and some info on that is here:

from the people who bring you Joe.ie and Her.ie comes the news that on 6th November a new sports online platform will be launched – more detail on Sportsjoe.ie here

two UTV Ireland/Newstalk stories here – Newstalk will be supplying news for UTV Ireland when it starts broadcasting in the New Year and Newstalk Breakfast presenter, Chris Donoghue becomes the Anchor for news and current affairs on the new TV station but will also retain his breakfast stint at Newstalk – good news as Ivan wouldn’t be the same without Chris!

PR lessons from "Gone Girl", design a 'Guybrator' & who'd be Sinn Fein's PRO this week

4 PR lessons from “Gone Girl”
Fresh from seeing the film last night, I couldn’t resist this piece offering PR lessons from the book and film!  The tips include preparing for the media, coming clean and calling in the experts.  What was shown to great effect in the film is how quickly the story caught hold and how Nick found himself under siege by the media with his marriage being discussed and torn apart on TV by so-called ‘experts’!   And a couple of twists later -  how he is loved by the media!

Design a Guybrator please!
It’s all about the language you use - whether selling a vibrator, guybrator or an e-cigarette according to the case studies in this interesting article.   When the guys who designed “Pulse” – a guybrator – or vibrator for men – stopped calling it a ‘sex toy’ and instead described it as a “therapeutic massager for the health and wellness sector”, designers and the banks began to listen!  Similarly the ‘Blu Ecig’ is not described as a smoking cessation device but as a ‘lifestyle choice’.  Design-wise, it’s black with a blue tip which re-enforces that messaging.  When selling a controversial product, the advice is to “do it with conviction” – like Red Bull does.

Worst PR job this week – PRO for Sinn Fein?
I don’t usually go political in my blog but, from a communications point of view, it will be a challenging week for Sinn Fein.  Who’d want to be their public relations officer?  Interesting to see how they handle the Mairia Cahill story over the next few days?  How will Mary Lou McDonald separate the ‘new’ Sinn Fein from the old?  For example, Mairia Cahill, who seems to be brave beyond belief and believed by most people, stated this morning on Newstalk Breakfast that her grandfather recruited Gerry Adams into the IRA – yet he still maintains he was never a member. Ms. McDonald made a point of emphasising her Dublin roots i.e far removed from what went on in Belfast during those years.  So how will she show Sinn Fein has moved on and is an open transparent organisation while supporting Gerry Adams’ denial and the old SF/IRA hierarchy?

Snapchat introduces opt-in ads, Don't over-promise and is your Press Release easy to scan?

Snapchat introduces Opt-in Ads
Be interesting to see how this works – Snapchat has introduced opt-in ads as it tries to monetise its 100+ million users.  The ads will be woven in with ‘stories’ which last 24 hours and not just seconds.  This will be avidly watched by brands targeting a younger target audience – apparently Lynx and McDonald’s trialled the ads on a limited basis.

Don’t over-promise
Reading the article below – which is about getting an online business ready for Christmas - reminded me of a recent disappointing experience I had when I checked out a new Irish online store for yoga and fitness gear.  I've seen this company profiled quite extensively in the Irish media - broadcast and print- and am in the market for some Pilates clothing.  The owner also referenced Sweaty Betty whose clothes I really like (see photo above) – they’re pricey but good quality and are designed to meet the requirements of people doing yoga, pilates, running etc.  Anyway when I logged on, I was disappointed with the very small selection of clothing on offer from the new company – a big fuss had been made about a limited offering. I acknowledge that they are only starting out and that the stock may be increased as the business grows – I hope so.  But my advice is, only do a soft launch when you’re starting out especially if only offering a limited stock.

Is your press release easy to scan?
Newsrooms are like many businesses – they’ve cut back on staff over the past few years which means journalists are even busier.  Many also have to produce content for online as well as offline versions – and they receive hundreds and even thousands of emails daily – of which your press release is just one.  So chances are they will scan the release first to see if there’s anything of interest for them.  The article below has tips on how to make that easy for them including putting the news up front, using bullet points and cutting out the faff.

Now we have "Super Thursday", finding your voice on Twitter & Guardian launches online book store

Introducing “Super Thursday”
We’re familiar with “Black Friday” (day after Thanksgiving) and “Mega Monday” (biggest day for pre-Xmas online sales – but I don’t know which Monday that is?!!) – anyway, this Thursday 9th October is officially “Super Thursday” – where independent booksellers will launch 315 new titles in the race for the Christmas best-seller.  Unofficially apparently they’ve done it before but this year the publishers have got behind them.  It’s a big campaign as they’ve got artist Tracy Emin on board as the face of the campaign and she’s also designed a “Books are my Bag” Tote – literary ‘celebs’ including Michael Palin are also lending their support.  Interesting to see how this goes – and what amazon and the big book retailers do?

Twitter helps SMEs sing!
I missed this article when it first appeared in September but it’s got one crucial  message – how having your own ‘voice’ helps SMEs distinguish themselves on Twitter.   But my tuppence worth is that this actually has a wider application than just Twitter – the same ‘voice’ should be used in all communication whether it’s via online or offline media, with customers, with staff, with stakeholders, with whoever!

Newspaper looks at new way to generate income
This is an interesting development from the Guardian newspaper – it has launched its own online bookshop – how long until the Irish Times does likewise?!  I’m on a panel regularly surveyed by the Times and a recent survey asked about a book club – so surely an online shop is not far behind?!  I like the Guardian’s honesty about their rationale – “Every book you buy from us helps the Guardian to continue providing free online global news and supports independent, liberal journalism.”

FA Chief condemns dirty tricks by Qatar, "Swim the M50" and insight on motorists in Ireland

FA Chief condemns dirty tricks by Qatar
This is a very interesting story from Channel 4 about a sports blog called “The Pressing Game” which attacks critics of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.  It appears to have been set up by the PR company, Portland Communications who have since distanced themselves from it.  Most articles on the blog are apparently written by former head of communications for the Labour party, Alastair Campbell and his son.  Campbell was an adviser to Portland until recently. This is known as “astroturfing” (a new one on me) which is using a blog which masks the organisation which sets it up or runs it – and tries to create a sense of a grassroots movement.  Again, it’s the cover-up and lack of transparency that makes this newsworthy.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion – but if you have an interest, declare it.

“Swim the M50” Challenge announced to celebrate rebrand
Speaking of declaring an interest – here’s a story from one of my clients – Dublin City Council Sports & Recreation division! I was tasked by them to create awareness of their rebranded Sports & Fitness Centres amongst current and potential customers.  So I advised them to run a Challenge that would excite and motivate consumers – and the Centre Managers came up with the “Swim the M50” concept!  It happens on 29th October and entrance to the 4 participating Centres is free that day!  See pieces below from inshore-ireland.com and BusinessAndLeadership.com

Irish Motorists
3 million Irish people own a car – or maybe that should read 3m people in Ireland own a car – according to the latest Kantar/TGI media insight on Irish motorists. A mix of TV and outdoor advertising is recommended as the most effective way to reach them.  Older one-car families are big TV consumers while slightly younger two-car families are in the heaviest one fifth consumers of outdoor advertising.  More here …….

Should SMEs work for free, cute cheetah cubs & "Hotel Parents"......

Should freelancers & Small Business Owners work for free?
Hell, no! When I saw the title of this article, I thought “how ridiculous!” – and then I read it and realised that I have been that idiot – I have worked for little or nothing on occasion in the hope that it will lead to bigger and better new business opportunities.  Generally speaking, it doesn’t!  And, that time-worn saying is so true – if you don’t value yourself, no-one else will.  Charities are different – you may want to help a charity out – which is admirable but there’s a good piece of advice in this article – state up front how much time you are willing to give.  People sometimes work for free or at a vastly reduced rate in order to get greater exposure – but as the author says, “exposure is also something people die of – it doesn’t pay the bills!”  Be sure to click through to the 3.5 minute video mentioned here from writer Harlan Ellison, “Pay the writer” – he leaves us in no doubt what the answer will be to a request to him to work for free!

“Hotel Parents”
This was a new term on me I have to admit!  Apparently 11% of the populations are “Hotel Parents” – aged 35+ with a son or daughter aged over 15 living with them.  They are an affluent group with a heavy usage of radio and newspapers – worth bearing in mind if you are trying to target this grou.

Cheetah Cubs
Now what excuse, sorry, marketing nugget can I come up with to justify my use of this video showing ever-so-cute cheetah cubs which were born on 1st September at San Diego Zoo?!  Ah yes – if your ‘bullseye customer’ loves animals, why not use one in your marketing communications?  We’ve all heard and seen how cat videos rule the internet – but even though I’m the skivvy of a cat myself (dogs have owners, cats have staff!) – the cat thing is probably overdone online, so think about choosing a different animal!

3 ways to close off a press release, what your phone says about you & becoming a beauty entrepreneur

3 ways to close off your press release
This was a new one on me I have to admit – it’s usually all about the start of your press release – so this caught my eye!  I’ve no problem with the first recommendation, “Make a strong statement” or with the final one which is a bit self-evident.  But the second one “Find some common ground” I do have an issue with – for two reasons.  I don’t disagree – but common ground should be established as early in a press release as possible so the reader easily sees WIIFM – What’s In It For Me.  And the recommendation to write something like “You’ve seen what we can do for your life……” is just plain wrong!  That is (bad) advertising speak and has no place in a press release!

What your mobile phone says about you
As 1.7m mobile phone owners were researched for this study, it’s worth a look.  As an iPhone owner, I see I am 16 times more likely to be interested in Brad Pitt than the average person online (keep looking over your shoulder Angelina!), 4.3 times more interested in crime films (sounds right), 19 times more likely to research skiing holidays and 5x times more likely to book a cruise (never been on either!). Find out what your phone says about you here……

How to become a Beauty Entrepreneur
Tips from a panel of experts to those thinking of starting a beauty business include staying on top of – but not being led by – trends, establishing a business because you have a passion for it and not just because you see a market opportunity, using Twitter and LinkedIn, joining trade associations and attending trade shows.  One really good piece of advice was to read every beauty article you possibly can, track down the journalists who write them and email them about your business. You should also, of course, follow these journalists on Twitter and look out for opportunities to engage with them and supply helpful information.

Malaysia Airlines 'Bucket List', how 'Image' mag is growing & teenage males revealed!

Bringing your business to your customers
In a very competitive market, how does a ‘traditional’ business arrest a decline or even grow?  Irish women’s magazines have done well to survive over the past few years in the face of declining ad revenue, competition from cheaper UK titles and the migration of readers online. This article in The Irish Times tell us that the latest ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) figures show that Image magazine achieved a +1% growth.
For about 18 months now, Image has been staging very high quality breakfast events – usually at The Marker hotel.   They have a good networking session, great speakers, a light but yummy breakfast and always a fab goody bag – with the gift worth at least the cost of the ticket (€45) and often more!  They also have invested in a really good online offering – Image Daily.  And of course, it always packs a good read.
I would love to hear the inside track on how Stellar magazine, albeit from a low base, grew by 108%?!  Well done to them!
While the Harmonia titles – Irish Tatler, U and Woman’s Way - all declined, they actually have a similar readership to Image - Irish Tatler 23,000, U 22,000 and Image 22,000.  But as a media buyer says in this article, “While the readership may be small, it’s loyal.” l Harmonia also hosts events but tend to go for large scale events such as the Ultimate Girls Day Out and the Irish Tatler Business Academy.

Malaysia Airlines “Bucket List” campaign
Yes, folks it’s true – Malaysia Airlines recently launched a new campaign called, “My Ultimate Bucket List”.  Despite losing two planes this year – one which disappeared and one which was shot down over the Ukraine – they managed to come up with this bizarrely named promotion.  The promotion asked customers which destination they would most like to visit and are offering prizes of 12 return flights from Oz or New Zealand or one of 4 iPads.  They have since changed the name of the promotion.

Teenage Males more influenced by Celebrity
In this latest insight from Kantar Media TGI and adworld.ie, we learn that there are 321,000 15-19 year olds in Ireland.  I was surprised to see that teenage males are 3 times more likely to be influenced by a celebrity for purchasing decisions than the average adult.  14% of these males tend to buy products from companies that sponsor TV programmes.

Forget Ice Bucket - how about "Boob Aid" or #FeelingNuts?! Entrepreneur Awards launched & Tesco community initiatives

Tips for Entrepreneurs from Award winners:

·        -  Don't be afraid to ask for help or support
·        - Assume you will have to hustle for every sale
·         - Diversify your financial risk as much as possible
·        -  Never allow a lack of experience or knowledge get in the way of pursuing a seemingly impossible task

These tips are from Simon O’Connor, Curator, Little Museum of Dublin, who also says, “an expert is just an amateur who decided to chance their arm!"   He was speaking at the launch of the 2015 David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards – Little Museum of Dublin was the 2014 winner. To see tips from other David Manley Award winners, see www.davidmanleyawards.ie Open to enterprises in business, the arts and social community which are less than 3 years old, the closing date for entries is Friday 3rd October 2014.  Disclosure – I am a sponsor of and PRO for the Awards!

Forget Ice Bucket, how about “boob aid” or #FeelingNuts?!

This wasn’t a very smart move by the ALS (motor neurone disease) Association or ALSA as it’s known – who tried to copyright the “Ice Bucket Challenge” - other charities kicked up a storm saying that fundraising events such as runs, walks etc can’t be copyrighted.  See link for more detail below – but the following fundraising ideas caught my attention and made the “cool” ice bucket challenge look tame in comparison!   A charity for testicular cancer is running a social media campaign – Check One Two – which encourages people to take interesting photos and upload them – with the tag - #FeelingNuts.  And, for the 12th year running, a Japanese campaign for Aids Prevention called “Boob Aid” sees porn stars allowing their breasts to be fondled!  http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/als-ice-bucket-challenge-charities-battle-for-ice-bucket-rights-9701866.html

Tesco battles discounters with community initiatives

Always interesting to see how companies compete when they can’t do it on price.   “Embattled” Tesco has steadily lost share to the discounters and they’re also back in the news with the new CEO taking over the reins in the UK today.  Despite the talk that the new CEO will compete on price, this remains to be seen as Tesco shareholders have always wanted a higher margin.  So they’ve been fighting back on other fronts – and charities seem to be the main beneficiary.  If you shop in any of their stores at the moment, you get a token at the checkout and you decide which of 3 local charities’ Perspex containers you put the token into – i.e. which local charity you support.  A really nice initiative.  Now, Tesco is donating €10,000 to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease charity in recognition of the fact that they sold 66,000 additional bags of ice over the past couple of weeks!  Tesco get a lot of stick but when charities benefit…….

Baking Bad, hotel fines guests for bad review & 5 Twitter tips from Steve Martin

Baking Bad?!
Turning lemons into lemonade – Greggs, a British bakery, has won a lot of plaudits for the simple but effective way they responded when their logo was hacked online.  They tweeted Google UK with a request to fix it – in return for a tray of yummy looking doughnuts – pictured in a photo accompanying the tweet, complete with branded apron in the background! See how Google responded……

5 Twitter tips from Steve Martin
“Don’t respond to everyone”, “Observe reality” and “Create your own Schedule” are just three of the Twitter tips featured here from actor/comedian, Steve Martin.  A relative newcomer to Twitter (2010), he realised quickly that people were really engaging with him and saved their responses for a year before writing a book with the snappy title of, “The Ten, make that Nine, Habits of Very Organised People. Make that Ten. The Tweets of Steve Martin” which is very well received by the reviewer in this article.  Definitely, a celebrity has different challenges to a brand but there’s a few nuggets in this article.

Fining guests for bad reviews!
This is one of those initiatives that makes you wonder – who came up with this idea – and even worse, who approved it?!!  A New York guest house decided it was going to fine guests $500 for a bad review online!  It seems they started the ball rolling with “multiple guests at a single wedding ceremony” – I’m not sure if they tried fining them or just told them about it, but sure enough, when those guests talked about it – firstly amongst themselves – they then took to the internet and it spread like wildfire!
